Shape Detectives

Driving Question:

How can we identify and build 3D shapes?

Activity Overview:

Shape detectives are on the case! In this lesson, students explore 3D shapes in the real world by sorting, comparing, and hunting for cubes, cones, cylinders, and more. Then they put their skills to work: students will pick a shape, grab a build template, then use the ChompSaw to build their very own 3D model out of cardboard!

Preview/Background Knowledge

  • Students should be able to identify 2D shapes including squares and triangles
  • Students should have an understanding of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
Prep Instructions

Print and prep (class sets of each)

  • 3D nets for tracing (one per student)
  • Assessment K–1 or Assessment 1–2 (choose one based on your grade)
  • 3D Shape Hunt worksheet (if using as an extension)

Gather materials:

  • ChompSaw(s) and cardboard
  • Tape and glue (glue sticks for attaching templates to cardboard)
  • Colored crayons (for the K–1 coloring assessment)
  • A 3D object like a block or book: useful for pointing out faces, edges, and vertices during the lesson

Set up your slides:

  • Pull up the Vocabulary Slides ahead of time for any students who need language frontloading
  • Have the Full Lesson Slide Deck ready in slideshow view — several slides use animations that walk students through shape parts step by step, so clicking order matters
  • On Slide 19, edit the materials list to reflect what's actually available in your classroom
  • On Slide 22, delete the assessment image you're not using so only one version shows

Prep your ChompSaw station:

  • If you have multiple ChompSaws, group students in fives for the cutting step
  • If you only have one, plan to call students up individually while the rest of the class works on other steps

Optional — prep for differentiation:

  • Pre-glue rectangular prism or cube templates onto cardboard for students who need a simpler shape or an earlier start on cutting
Extensions

Shape Creature Challenge

  • Students combine multiple 3-D shapes to invent a brand-new creature.
    • Students must:
      • use at least 3 different 3-D shapes
      • label the shapes used
      • explain why they chose each shape

3D Shape Hunt

  • Students use this worksheet to walk around the room and draw 3D shapes that they see in the corresponding box. (Tissue box, dice, paper towel roll etc) This could also be edited and given as an additional assessment or homework.

Tallest Tower Challenge

  • Students work individually or in teams to build the tallest freestanding structure using cardboard shapes.
    • Challenge Rules
      • must include at least 2 different 3-D shapes
      • tower must stand on its own

Mystery Shape Challenge

  • Place real-world objects or cardboard shapes inside a bag. Students ask yes/no questions to figure out the hidden shape.
    • Example Questions
      • Does it roll?
      • Does it have corners?
      • Does it have flat faces?
      • Is it solid?
      • Can it stack?
    • Optional Challenge
      • Students become the "Shape Detective Leader" and answer classmates' questions.
